Good Neighbors’ Summer Camp:

Our 15th Annual SHEMESH Good Neighbors’ Summer Camp is underway!.Paired Arab and Jewish counselors,  almost 100 Jewish and Arab campers and the use of both Arabic and Hebrew in camp activities make this one of the most successful, on going Jewish-Arab programs in Israel.

Youth Leadership Training:

Since 1996 the summer camp has been preceeded by a week-long seminar for youth leaders. SHEMESH organizes the project within the framework of the Network of Jewish-Arab Community Organizations. The Project includes:

  • Leadership Training Workshops in preparation for the summer camp

  • Group Building Activities to develop trust , cooperation and friendships

  • Exploring the Jewish-Arab conflict so all participants can recognize the hopes, fears and dreams of “the other”

SHEMESH has trained a new generation of young people to dream about a different Israel.

Our Graduates Include:

  • Forsan Hussein – a graduate of Brandeis University, recipient of the Slifka Scholarship for his involvement in SHEMESH. Read an award winning article written about Forsan in the Boston Globe.

  • Anwar Shabrawi – a teacher, has worked for many years as a SHEMESH counselor and coordinator, now serves on the SHEMESH Board and still works at the summer camp

  • Itai Oren – lives on a kibbutz Eshbal in the Galilee and continues to work for Jewish-Arab coexistence in its Center for Joint Existance.

  • Tsila Perlman and Fadi AbuElHaj -began as SHEMESH campers. This summer they work together as co-counselors on the music staff of the Camp.

The Jewish-Arab School at Misgav:

SHEMESH was one of the initiators of the bi-lingual Jewish-Arab School in the Misgav Region of the Galilee, sponsored by Hand in Hand. Very few integrated Jewish-Arab schools exist in Israel. Now in its sixth year, it has over 150 students. SHEMESH implements a weekly “after school activities program” in collaboration with Eshbal and the Noar HaOved veHaLomed youth movement. The school is endorsed by The Israel Ministry of Education.

Women Meeting Women:

SHEMESH sponsored women’s groups have given dozens of Arab and Jewish women an opportunity to better understand each other’s culture and way of life. Most importantly, these groups have built friendships between individuals and families that would not otherwise have occurred. Workshops and discussions have focused on:

  • Violence against women

  • Women in politics

  • Women and the family

  • Women and community action

  • Cultural workshops

One group has set this year’s goal as “peer counseling training.”
